Quick question. First of all, let me explain my scenario.
I have a News node. This node has 3 children: NewsItem1, NewsItem2 and News Feed. The parent News node uses a template that calls a Macro that creates and shows the list of all news items. The single News Item uses a simple template that shows the News Item fields. Differently, News Feed is based on a different template that changes the page Content Type to XML and outputs all news as a RSS feed.
I guess this is a common situation.
I was thinking that everything works fine but I realized it does not: in order to test the page I use the preview functionality - as I don't want this section to be published for the moment. It is also true that I am working on a dev environment, so I actually published only the News main page and 1 news item child.
When I use the preview feature, I can see the list of news showing up, but it displays only 1 news item, the one that I have published.
My point is if I am using the PREVIEW feature to check the result of my editing before actually publishing it, why can't I see the unpublished items?
Also I tried to publish even the 2nd news item, and everything runs smoothly. Thereafter I tried to make a change on the title of this latter news item, without publishing... I used again the preview button and - again - the changes were not displayed. I was able to see just what was published.
Did I misunderstand the meaning of the Preview feature? I thought that "preview" means to see in advance what will be live. Am I wrong?
This basically allows you to have a editing/staging server and then publish to the 'live' server, this could of course offer you a 'true' preview as you could publish everything on your editing server and view it before publishing to live.
I guess this wasn't the answer you were looking for but I'm sure someone else will come along with a more direct answer to your question soon.
Preview works just on published nodes?

What version of Umbraco are you using?
I don't think the preview feature was very reliable prior to 4.5

This may not be of use but Umbraco do offer courier to purchase http://umbraco.org/products/umbraco-courier
