Using TLS for page notifications

Is it possible or supported?

I get an endless loading with a timeout message

This has been added in the web config (I'm not sure if it is right for TLS?:
<network host="*****" userName="***" password="****" port="465" enableSsl="true" />

A valid email has been added in umbracoSetting.config

The server and credentials have been tested in a custom control and work for sending from an enquiry form but I can't get it wo work for page notifications
