How do you want to add the word / excel files to your sample page? Is it by linking to the files from the rich text editor? If so then you just need to upload the files in the "media" section and then reference them in a rich text editor on your "Sample page" in Umbraco choosing them in the link dialogue.
If you want to easily add search functionality to your site you should have a look at the exSearch package.
If you want to do some custom search integration then you should have a look at examine I guess.
