The short reply is that it's not a patch (x.y.Z) release, but a minor (x.Y.z) release which always involved more testing. In addition we've spending more ressources testing the releases now than earlier.
7.2 came out in December last year, 7.1 in April 2014.

When will 7.3 be released?
7.28 came out on july 16 2015 7.30 was updated august 21 2015
And today we write september 29 2015 that's little over 3 months.
I've been looking through the other releases and generally there has been just one month in between.
What's so special with this release that it needs 3 months +- to get released?
Just asking out of curiosity :)

Any time soon. Whether that mean days or 1-2 weeks depends if a showstopper bug appears during testing.
All tests passed. Ignition sequence start - you can download 7.3 within the hour :-)
Oh and just for the kicks I already have the first site up running on 7.3.0 :)
