I find the Stackoverflow editor great, dont you agree? They are using a tweaked version of the WMD editor. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2483391/what-html-editor-is-used-by-stackoverflow
The thing is WMD editor is going to be open source any day (already?) and I like to suggest you umbraco-ninjas to have a look at it.

But it's not really a good for non-techies. WYSIWYG will always be much friendlier than mark-down

Stackoverflow html editor going open source (kind of)
