There isn't a way OOTB, but you could use the Standard Values package which allows you to set default values for fields in each Document Type - it's pretty handy. You could also look at jesper Easy Values if you are wanting the node's name or date to be the default value, for instance for a "Page Headline" field.
Other than that you'd need to make a custom datatype or use events as shown in the Easy Values source (which is pretty straightforward).
