Web Service/Syndication of Umbraco managed content

I am trying to learn about how to access a prospective client's Umbraco managed content in a Mobile App i am writing (Iphone/ipad).   Is there a simple way that content that is created and managed in Umbraco can get easily syndicated and exposed through a web service interface (ideally JSON).   Thanks to anyone who can point me to an article or explain to me how this would happen.

    Hi Adam,

    Good question there :)

You're able to output XML or JSON aswell as (x)HTML from your XSLT files. There's a video about it on umbraco.tv (the RIA/Flash one) or you could have a look at how I did it here: http://www.bo-mortensen.dk/2011/03/combining-silverlight-4-and-umbraco-pt-i-setting-up-umbraco/

Of course, if you have a whole lot of XSLT files, it will take some time to create new ones that output XML or JSON. Another option might be accessing the webservices in Umbraco: http://our.umbraco.org/wiki/reference/files-and-folders/files-in-the-config-folder/umbracosettingsconfig (Under Webservices)

What I would not recommend is to access the database directly to manipulate data as it's easy to mess up due to relations, caching and such.

    / Bo

    Hey Bo,

thanks for the help, I appreciate it. Are you an independant contractor? If we win the work i will be looking for someone to help out either consulting or building the middleware. Thanks again for the help.

    Hi Adam,

No problem there, happy to help :-)

Yes, I'm an independent webdeveloper from Denmark. Unfortunately, I haven't got any experience with developing for iPad and/or iPhone :-/ Primarily working with Umbraco.

    All the best,

    Bo
