Whole site gets corrupted all nodes have URL '#'

Ahhhh so I am having the worst few weeks. I have a very large website (4.7.1) which has crashed twice.

All nodes appear to be published but when i look at them they have document links to '#'.

When i try and republish i get an object not set to instance of object.

When i look in the App_Data folder I can see that the umbraco.config file has vanished.

I look at the Umbraco logs and I can see the following error: "Error Republishing: System.Xml.XmlException: '.', hexadecimal value 0x00, is an invalid character. Line 3, position 1"

I also get "[UmbracoExamine] Error indexing queue items,There is an error in XML document (78, 39)., IndexSet: InternalIndexSet"

This all seemed to start last week when i updated a document type.

The only thing that seems to let me republish the nodes again is to reset the permissions on all the documents. But even then I cant just republish the whole site i need to go in an indovidually publish sections.

Any help or suggestions would be very very much appreciated.

ps:weirdly the front end of the site is not showing the error as if it doesnt understand the character encoding.

Or don't paste weird characters in! ;-)

Be aware that you might have a few challenges upgrading as we have made some breaking changes in later versions of 4. We've since bettered our live and try not to do that any more for non-major versions but back in the 4.7 times that wasn't something we paid much attention to unfortunately.
