Upgrading an old site with some new functionallity.

I have a custom section with a dsahboard control, used the old style dashboard before and had my menu ccs:ed like the menu bar like Umbracos own. Now I need to use tabs in this section but then the umbraco menu bar is displayed. So I thought I might use that for my menu items, but cant seam to find any documentation on how to add items to it.... This is on a old V3 also...
