(Is Umbraco ideal?)Would like to extend to a user-centred site with the following,
Hi
I would like to build a website with many users subscribing to it. I am interested in an extensible and well documented solution/API. I was referred to Umbraco and have the following questions:
- If the server runs .NET 2, would that be a problem? Is Umbraco updated in parallel for all .NET versions?
- Are there any trust issues I have to deal with?
- Can I develop using Sharpdevelop? I see there is alot of mention of Microsoft.NET. Does this exclude people without the IDE (i think I'm wrong to assume, but best i ask)
Umbraco is very extensible, so you can hook in your own code almost anywhere. Regardin API documentation, it is on it's way, but at the moment there a bit of a learning curve to get started I'm afraid. But it is well worth it. If you want to get started really fast, there are some (paid) videos at umbraco.tv which will get you up to speed on a lot of the stuff umbraco can do, and go into depth as well. Otherwise, I recommend reading trough the wiki and start messing around with it to see how things work. And then ask here on the forums when you get stuck.
I think umbraco i built for the .Net 2.0 framework, so that is no problem.
Umbraco needs full trust on the web host, so make sure you can get that before investing.
Regarding sharpdevelop, I haven't tried it myself, but I have seen others use it. However I know that Umbraco does not run on Mono. (I'm not an expert on this, so I don't know if those two things are connected).
I hope this answers some of you initial questions.
Adding to Morten's reply: yes, Umbraco is a .NET 2.0 platform right now. SharpDevelop looks really cool, thanks for the mention, I'll have to check it out. If it can build ASP.NET 2.0 compliant DLL's then by all means, go for it, should work just fine!
Thanks for the feedback and the insight. Will have to look into it further. Its unfortunate ther's no API documentation yet. Sometimes I do know that a good community can offer some sort of substitute. How much are the paid videos? Are they comprehensive and can I get offline versions? Any feedback on how "good" they are? Will look at the site you mentioned.
Sorry for the 21 questions
Are there any existing opensource frameworks/CMSs that I could make use of or just take a look at...not that you should play down Umbraco ;-)? I am really impressed by the number of sites running it.
Other than that, are there any other frameworks that abstract functions like user profiling and security, provide database abstractions...etc
I also got tipped on www.cuyahoga-project.org, but the community is very tiny and there are not that many developers from the looks of it.

Umbraco is not ideal, but it sure is great! ;-)

Any further advice will be greatly appreciated
