Remember with Umbraco 4.x you can now use the standard asp.net membership controls.
Have youtried using asp:LoginView instead?
I second Chris' suggestion, go for the standard asp.net login controls. Controls can be quite easily 'templated' so you can use your own naming and styling. Just drop them (copy'n'paste) on a template and you're set.
