I'm not sure if this is the best/right forum for this, but here goes.
Has anyone developed a module/extension to Umbraco that delivers content along these lines http://elgg.org/about.php.
Alternatively, is anyone aware of a .net project that delivers similar functionality that coudl easily(ish :) ) be added to an Umbraco powered website

actually - it was kind of what I was expecting.
I guess what I am really looking for is thoughts on what a good external product would be that could be easily coupled with umbraco (wrt styling, data integration etc).
