My company is looking to ditch sharepoint as a CMS and pick a new system. It's between sitecore, sitefinity and umbraco right now. I think we will go towards umbraco due to cost.
My question is, how hard is it to extend umbraco to do custom workflow? We would want multi-level approval for publish with some if/then branches for who it would go to. Nothing to terrible complex but I don't think umbraco offers this out of the box.
Approval process for documents is available oob, albeit in very *light* version. Extending umbraco to do custom workflow is possible and would require some development skills. I've seen some tweets about @darrenferguson who's currently working on a package to support workflow foundation from within umbraco, so if that's what you're looking for, get in touch with him.
