I have just finished developing a quite comprehensive members area for companies and employees.
The size of the area is 3,000+ company records and potentially 20,000+ employee records.
The thought was to have each company recorded as a Member group and also as a Member linked to the associated Member group.
Then all the recorded employees will be created as members and also linked to their associated member group.
ISSUE
In terms of controlling access to the pages within the site the intention was to programmatically add (via user control) each new member group created to the Public Access / Role Based Protection of the members area.
QUESTION
Would having 3,000+ member groups linked to a members area create a performance issue.
Would it be better to have one central group controlling access to the members area ? If so then each member would be linked to 2 groups - the access controller group and their own company group.
Further to my original post I have since implemented Plan B - this being each member belonging to 2 member groups. 1 being the access control group, the other being a way to link related members.
Unfortunately there is still a serious performance issue with the site.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback.
