Entering a numerical content type name removes the first numerican character for the alias but the rest remain and trying to then save throws a null alias param excepiton.

Are you experiencing this on Umbraco 4.7 or what version is in question?
Could you provide an example of the name and alias you get this error with? I'm not entirely sure this is a bug.
