Having two or more templates with the same alias makes it impossible to remove the templates. Also is seems that accessing a template by name (for example example.com/JSON if you have a template called JSON, but no node called JSON) goes wrong.
I've seen a bug like "JSON has already been added to the collection", so perhaps in the Umbraco code somewhere a collection is used that doesn't accept duplicate values or keys.
