    'Service Unvailable' ?!?

    Hi,

I have a site running Umbraco 4.0.2.1, hosted by Surftown. I took me quite a While to fix all the issues of getting the site to run on surftown, but after adding a few files and so on, the application finally fired up.

Except, When I installed it as a blank installtion, without Runway or likewise, it would not show any content on my host-header. I created Templates, document Types and so on, and the published a Home Page on the site - but nothing appeared in the browser. As if there were no pages created at all. No matter what I did I could not make it show anything.

Then I reinstalled Umbraco WITH Runway and have spent a week tweaking it to my demands, and then now suddenly today, I get 'Service unavailable' and there's nothing I can do.

I can't acces Umbraco in any way, everything just shows 'Service Unavailable.

It happened shortly after i installed 'Contour', but when I installed this the installation never gave me a 'completed' notion. When I had been waiting for it for 1,5 hours I refreshed the page and it seemed as if it was just my browser that had not refreshed. but then I went to make some changes under content, and thats when the error occurred, and I have not been able to do anything since.

I feel that I have had a lot of problems, and I haven't experienced this amount of trouble with Umbraco on any of the other sites I've worked with. Are there a lot of Bugs in 4.0.2.1?? And can anyone please help about what to do about the Service Unavailable thing - I would really hate to have to start all over again.

    Kind Regards

    Ulla

    Hi,

It's likely to be an issue with your hosting, prehaps the permissions have been changed?

Can you get a copy of the database and site files and try and run the site locally to see if you get the same issues? What I would suggest you do is download the files, refresh the database user permissions and reset the directory permissions and check to see if you get the same error when running the site locally.

I have quite a few sites running 4.0.2.1 and I when I installed courier it took about 30 seconds to install, so it looks quite likely that it will be a permissions issue for the courier installation too.

    Cheers,

    Chris

    Hi Ulla,

I;m thinking more along the lines of a config error. If you're having "service unavailable" issues then it's likely an error in your web.config. Can you edit the web.config which is stopping the whole site from running.

It can also happen if for some reason the .net version was changed for the website.

Do you know if this was set up as a root site? If it isn't, then  you may also be having issues with the parent web.config as the handlers and mosules will cascade down to your "virtual directory"

    Hi all,

thank you for your great responses.

First of, I'm not sure I have acces to copy the database so I can run it locally on my MAMP installation, but I will try to find out.

Well it seems likely that there's permission problems, but I'm not sure which ones? The Umbraco installtion said "all permissions are perfect", and I'm actually just a webdesigner so my knowledge of what makes Umbraco tick is limited.

But I also happen to know that something has been going on with the ASP.NET on the server, because when i logged into my control panel on Surftown today I could not see the ASPNET settings, not until I had contacted their support, then it was visible again.

So that change might have caused the error (though I do not know WHAT has been going on)  - but how do I make it go away again?

Or if it has to do with the persissions on the Package I installed - is there any way for me to fix that when I'm not able to acces Umbraco?

... finally ... If everything goes wrong and I have to reinstall - Is all my work lost? or is there any way to reinstall keeping my templates, XSLT's, doc types and all that?? ( A guide link or likewise would be much appreciated).

Thank you so much for helping me.

    Cheers Ulla (ulsje.dk)

P.S. Yes, it is the root site, and I'm actually not able to view some minor sub-sites (ulsje.dk/V2) I have on the same domain, although they are NOT Umbraco Sites... freaks me out a little bit, doesn't sound like that could be caused by the Umbraco installtion...
