Items with recursive property set to true wont work in Canvas edit mode?

I am trying out the edit in canvas mode and everything works nice but
there is one thing that don't If I am setting a umbraco:Item to
recursive="true" it won't be editable in the panel, is this by design? I
want the footer to be editable and want the text to be "inherrited"
down so that I will only have to change it at one place. Can I do
this somehow? Anyone?
