But when creating partial view macros you have the opportunity to add parameters, which can be filled out if you need to insert a macro into a rich text editor for instance - Like the image carousel I know you're working on ;-). Those params can't be passed to a partial view like that for instance.
Yes they can - If you have an installation using the fanoe starter kit you can see that some of the possible options in the grid editor are defined as partial views in the Settings section in the /Partial VIews/Grid folder - Don't know if these exists in a clean installation as well (Using no starter kits).

While I kinda know the basics, what's the difference between marco and a partial view?
Do both work with the built-in grid system?

And as Antoine is describing here http://24days.in/umbraco/2014/grid-macros/ it's possible to use partial view macros as well.
