Anyone have an example of custom field type similar to the built-in dropDownList control? I need to create a ListBox field type that can source prevalues basically the same as the DropDownList.

You can hook the default dropdownlists to a prevalue source :)
Just create a prevalue source first (you can use datatype prevalues/documents/...)
Once that is in place you can set a dropdown to use the source (on additional settings)
