New basic installation on remote server

Hi, I'd be grateful for a quick bit advice for a new user. I'm trying to install Umbraco 8.5.3 on my remote server. I've created a database on Plesk and uploaded the Umbraco zip and extracted all files on the server.

    enter image description here

I'm now looking for the page that guides through the database login details and installs Umbraco. I've tried looking in the Umbraco\Install folder but I can't work out which page to call. If I go to mydomain in the browser, I just receive an application error. I must have missed something basic and any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Will

    Hi Will,

    is it a Windows server?

Usually when using Plesk it's 90% of the time a Linux server from my experience. Umbraco won't run on that yet.

Normally when your server runs .net, and if you browse to the root, it should automatically open the install application.

Hi, Ambert, Many thanks for your reply. I'm with Netcetera who provide Windows hosting for Umbraco. I previously installed Umbraco 7 on the same hosting account without any issue but trashed this to clean install Umbraco 8.

I un-packed the Umbraco zip on the server so I don't think I'm missing any files. I'll give it another go and post back how I get on. Thanks again.

Just following on with my problem with installing Umbraco 8 on a remote host, I have a couple more questions if anyone could help out please:

    1. I'd previously installed Umbraco 7 successfully on the same hosting account and noticed there was a "Default.aspx" file with that installation, however I cannot see this file in the Umbraco 8 zip. Is this correct?

    2. The current installation help mentions installing Umbraco 8 with Visual Studio. Is this the only way to deploy a new Umbraco 8 instance? (with Umbraco 7 I just uploaded the zip file, extracted and then pointed to my domain in the browser to get the installation Wizard)

    Many thanks in advance! Will

    Dear Will

If it is a fresh install then you don;t need to do anything. the zip does not have default.aspx.

Zip the code and put it on the server. Assuming the code directory is already configured with webserver just access the same from url . It will show up the installation page after sometime.

Also make sure the remote server meets the requirement for .netframework version

Hi, Kanika, Thank you for explaining this; I was thinking there would have to be a default page at the root level for the installation wizard, as with Umbraco 7. Kind regards, Will

Could it be your hosting provider runs .net 4.5 instead of 4.7.2+ ?

Thanks, Ambert, you are correct. I had wrongly assumed that the hosting company would have the correct .NET version installed for Umbraco 8, but this was not the case. It's now been corrected so I'll now see if I can make progress. Kind regards, Will

I have been using Netcetera in the past, it was fine.

Make sure that on Plesk your web application points to the folder with the the umbraco files.

If you don't run .net 4.7.2 or if you haven't set the right permissions on the umbraco folders and files you will start getting errors.

Hi, Alex, Thanks for the help. Got the correct .NET version installed now, but been having issues with the Extract function on Plesk which errors out. I am continuing to investigate.
    Regards, Will
