Is there any creative way to list approval requests of writers from within Umbraco?

You could try the following package:

https://our.umbraco.org/projects/backoffice-extensions/approve-it/

I can't vouch for whether it's any good or works, but it sounds like it will do what you want :)

There is also this new package that was released just today - it looks like it has a very comprehensive workflow and approval system:
