Are the thumbnails for all media created as jpgs. Various thread suggest they have the same extension as the image however on an umbraco 4.8 site I'm working on they all seem to be jpgs.
It's definately creating jpg thumbnails no matter what type of image I upload. I just did a test, created 3 media items of type Image and uploaded a png, gif and jpg. All 3 media items have jpg thumbnails.
Is there a setting somewhere that specifies what type of thumbnail to create or could this be a bug.
I haven't tried 4.8 yet so I don't know if it should just work out of the box. Did you do a clean 4.8 install or upgrade? Maybe something went wrong with upgrading. Otherwise it might be best to report it as a bug.

In 4.8 it should support png files, but I don't know what will happen with other extension: http://umbraco.codeplex.com/workitem/29167.
