I'll look at adding a checkbox to the data-type config/settings. This allows for multiple bit.ly instances across document-types. Lets say if you had one document-type that you wanted to auto-generate the bit.ly URL, and others you wanted to do it manually.
I could go the XML config route, but thinking its better to make use of existing UI.

I have made a start with the code, but ran into all sorts of tiny bugs/hiccups with the Umbraco UI - as due to the page life-cycle the bit.ly URL generates but doesn't display when you first publish - you'd need to reload the Edit screen ... hopefully I can iron out these issues when I get the time.
