If using the Unsubscribe confirmation url, will I then be able to redirect the use to a custom, nice, thank you page, and will Newsletter Studio still handle the unsubscribe event, or should I manually catch the event on my new custom page, and handle the unsubscription there ?

This url is used as a landing page after the user has unsubscribed. At the moment there is no built in way to make a user confirm theire unsubscription, if a user clicks the link they will be unsubscibed.
So if you are using the built in render task it will
- Unsubscribe the subscriber - Check for the "Unsubscribe confirmation url" if found redirect to that page. - If not found, just use a generic error message.
