    Hi Reinhold

    What database are you using?

Sorry, forgot to mention: MS SQL CE 4.0

That's probably the issue. I've had reports that a SQL script I'm using isn't supported by SQL CE. I've decided to drop support for SQL CE, because Microsoft has marked SQL CE as deprecated ("SQL Server compact edition is in deprecation mode with no new releases planned near future.").

    Sad to hear that....

Could you please add something like 'Not supported on SQL CE!' to the project page?

    Thank you,
    Reinold

Really, people like you make me want to stop doing projects like this.
You've got no idea how much time I've spent building this project and how time consuming it is to keep it up-to-date, especially when I'm really busy, like the last months.

I hope you understand that shouting at me is really insulting and unnecessary.

Come on gentlemen, take a deep breath and give each other a hug.

@Reinold: David Heinemeier Hansson once said something along the lines of "generosity is the currency of open source" and that's important to remember. Packages are often the result of a lot of hard work that people voluntarily share for free. That's actually very generous and fantastic. It can also be tough and fragile, because if you provided value to others and they responded by shouting, you'd likely stop (despite that the previous five people gave you a high five).

It doesn't mean that you can't criticise, just that it's important how you do it. Always strive for a constructive and friendly way of saying that the package have an issue and provide a way going forward. If you have the time and talent, an awesome way is to provide pull requests to the package, adding the support you wanted for your projects. If that's not a possible, you could help others by coming up with a solution on how to avoid being affected by the issues in the package.

So rather than telling kipusoep that "You need to make it clear", with pretty much the same effort you could have said: "I really appreciate the work you've done with 301 tracker and I wished I could have used it. Unfortunately, I was running SQL CE and it totally crashed my site. While I think the package would be better with SQL CE support, I can't help you with fixing your package but I do think that you could update the package description with a clear warning like this 'This package does not work if you use SQL CE. Don't try to install as it'll likely crash your site and corrupt your Umbraco installation. If you want to collaborate on SQL CE support, get in touch'."

@Kipusoep: Don't take everything personally, it'll destroy your motivation and the "Umbraco World" wouldn't be as good without your contributions. Remember that on writing things often look worse than intended.

Yes you're right. I think the main reason for me to take this the way I did is because I'm really frustrated about the fact that there's lot's of stuff to do and I don't have any time left to do it.

Reinold absolutely has a valid point, it's just the way of telling me his site crashed and it's all my fault.

    @Reinold
Have you tried removing the InfoCaster.UrlTracker.dll file from the bin folder? That should be enough to uninstall the UrlTracker from your website.

@kipusoep: I know where you're coming from. Umbraco didn't really took off before I realised that I couldn't do everything myself. You might want to open 301 up for more collaboration - trust me when I tell you that in the end it feels even more rewarding :-)

Yes I have some issues with having different coding styles in a project, but what more can I do other than the things I've already done; source is on Github, project is open for collab...

    Hi kipusoep

Really awsome that you open sourced it! And thank you for all the many hours you've put into it. You made something awesome with the 1. version and then made it even awesomer in version 2 :-) Wish I could give you many more high fives! :)

Regarding different code styles you could perhaps make a guideline and on pull requests you have the option of tutoring/guiding contributors to change something before you accept the pull request perhaps?

    Rock on!

    /Jan

Just as an addition to this: I know how crushing it can be to be receiving a blasting for things you've worked really hard to make as good as possible. I have to keep reminding myself daily to not take criticism too personally and on bad days it's difficult. You're not alone and this is an issue that many people in the Open Source community struggle with.

As for collaboration: it's difficult to get people to help, most people are just looking for a quick solution. But if they're frustrated or interested enough then they usually start contributing.
Contributions are not always perfect but people are happy to change their code until you're happy to accept the pull request.

I know I told you I could help with the CE stuff in the past and unfortunately I just got snowed under in other work so that hasn't happened yet.. Sorry! :-)

"Kindness is the currency of open source support" was the quote I was looking for: http://www.artima.com/forums//threaded.jsp?forum=123&thread=127927

No problem at all Sebastiaan, we all get snowed under from time to time! I just hope the sun will be shining bright soon, so the snow melts and there's nothing blocking my way to do some Url Tracker stuff again ;-)

Since kipusoep advertises this post on twitter I guess he wants opinions.
I have to agree with Reinold here, if package is known to break something, it is a good manners to either fix it, or WARN ABOUT IT. (and this is not shouting; this is an example how bold this warning should look. this way noone would miss it and be harmed)

    >especially when I'm really busy, like the last months.
That is totally understandable. Take it slow. A man just got his site dead. He is stressed too.

As a tip for next time: never do anything other than content-managing on live site. It can and will go wrong.

i'm very sorry for the missunderstanding - i did not want to shout at anybody, neither saying it was anybody elses fault than mine.... i really do appreciate all the work you guys are doing! my intention was to warn others from doing the same damn stupid thing that i did: installing the package on a sql ce production environment.... without testing it before and without a recent backup :-/

i have changed my post now.... hopefully that feels better that way..... sorry again!  (i have done this in a kind of stress situation.... :-)

(btw. i fixed the site by manually creating the table & the missing field on the table - which allowed me to log back in again and uninstall the package...)

    kind regards
    reinold

I'm glad you sorted it out, Reinold, and for clearing things up. Meanwhile I've taken the time to add a warning on the Url Tracker page.
