Login is not working when i change username/password

I was just testing to see if everything was working fine. I have couple of questions:
1] Is there a way that i can just display the member profile ?
2] When i clicked on edit user profile and when i changed the username and password, the login is not working on front end. I tried using both the previous and the changed username/password but the login doesnt seem to be working. When i went to the member section i was able to see that the username was updated to the changed one. Why would it not work then ?
